Val Haley would like to revisit the flag policy bylaw if she's elected.

NORWICH TOWNSHIP - She ran for the Ward 1 Council seat in the last election, and now she's giving it another go.

Valerie "Val" Haley ran against John Scholten, the former Ward 1 Councillor for Norwich Township, in the 2022 municipal election. Just under 125 votes separated the two in the end, with Haley securing 454 votes and Scholten finishing with 578 votes.

Now that Scholten has retired, Haley has decided to launch a campaign for the upcoming byelection. She says she has learned a lot since the municipal election back in 2022.

"I learned there was a lot I didn't know! But I have been following the council meetings and what's going on ever since then and I think I'm ready to step up and represent Norwich Township as a whole."

If she's elected to council, she would like to revisit the flag and banner bylaw that only allows for government flags to be flown on Township property.

"Especially around Remembrance Day when you go through all of the other towns and that and you see all of the veterans pictures up. There are also other holidays where it looks so nice, and I think we should look at that again and see if there is something we can do."

She adds there has been a lot of division in the Township, and she would like to bring everyone together.

Ward 1 covers the southern portion of Norwich Township including the communities of Otterville and Haley's hometown of Springford, where she has lived since 1979. Residents will head to the polls for the byelection on Monday May 6th.

You can find more details regarding Haley's campaign on her Facebook page.
