Zorra Mayor Margaret Lupton declares to run in October's election
One more term.
That's what Zorra Mayor Margaret Lupton says she has left, after a long career as a councillor and Mayor.
Lupton has filed her nomination papers to seek re-election, after sitting on the fence leading up to the new year. She didn't want to make a decision so soon, but says constant questions about whether or not she was going to run again forced her into making the decision.
Lupton tells Heart FM what her main priority is if she's re-elected to a second term as Mayor. "One of the reasons I really want to continue is I've done so much work and background and have gained so much knowledge and now we're hoping in the next year or two we'll be able to stand up and present the arguments we have and really begin the fight to protect Zorra."
The other issue facing Zorra Township is an eroding tax base, as farms consolidate, and farm houses are torn down to make way for more crops.
She hopes the next term will see some new residential growth. "Growth in Embro. We have quite a bit of land there ready for development. My understanding is we do have developers who are very interested. Hopefully we will be able to get something started in the very near future there."
Lupton's re-election will be contested. Beachville resident Ken Minler has also filed to jump in the race for Mayor. Minler was not immediately available for comment. We'll be talking with him in the days ahead here on Heart FM News.
