Kids are out in full force since Tillsonburg's outdoor rec pad opened.
TILLSONBURG - Kids in Tillsonburg now have a place to play sports.
The J.L.Scott McLean Rec Pad held a soft opening on January 25th.
Since the facility opened last week, Co-Chair Walter Kleer says the community has enjoyed using it.
"There's been great support from the community. The one clip I saw was a gentleman who was there in minus 15 degree weather and that he said he just couldn't keep his kids from it. Another one I noticed was a couple that's recent to town, they're excited to see a facility of this caliber in a small community like we have. So it's been very well received and I know it'll continue to be so in all facets of its use."
The pad is in memory of J.L Scott, a local businessman and minor sports coach who passed away in 2016.
Prior to opening, the facility was supported through fundraiser's in the community. Kleer says the town maintains and takes care of the outdoor facility, which will be used for sports like ball hockey and basketball.
Kleer says it is free to use and kids can play all year round.
"The concept is basically user-free, which was a big component of the actual project, so basically it's free to use for anybody and of all ages. There are some timelines for use, but it's also year round so it'll accommodate basketball and ball hockey. It's just a great facility for the town."
It comes with a 60' x 120' outdoor ice rink, operated four to five months out of the year, along with a a street hockey rink with three 40'x60' wide basketball courts.
There will be a grand opening on Family Day, which will include a ribbon cutting ceremony. The event will begin at 10:45am.
The J.L.Scott McLean Rec Pad is located behind the Tillsonburg Community Centre, east of the two hockey arenas.
