Woodstock Hydro is encouraging residents to turn the lights off and conserve energy as we mark Earth Hour Saturday night.

Many Canadians will be observing Earth Hour Saturday.

The growing movement also includes continuing initiatives from Woodstock Hydro.

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement for the planet originally organized by the World Wildlife Fund and started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007.

Woodstock Hydro Manager of Operations Jay Heaman says it's an opportunity for the utility to educate customers about their energy usage.  "We're challenging people just to take that hour (from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm) and identify those loads around their house that they may not think about, for example things that are being left on that don't need to be on, phantom loads such as TV converters, XBoxes and computers."

Heaman says that local residents who participate in their Earth Hour challenge are eligible to win one of ten $50 energy saving prize packs.  "For Earth Hour, the challenge that we are having for this Saturday is to challenge people to make an effort, do something in your house and then send us an email and tell us your story."

They're also hoping to get more people engaged in a program to identify what devices in their home are costing them in energy usage.  "What we'd like to do this year is to have people become more engaged in a program where they're working in their home identifying what each device is costing them and than their measuring that result through their Smart Metre and what they'll find is easily 20 to 30 percent cost savings if they just put some time and effort in to that process and we'd like to help people this year."

Woodstock's Environmental Advisory Committee (WEAC) is one group which Heaman hopes residents can consult as a valuable resource on energy conservation.

Woodstock Hydro recently launched a Facebook page where people can find all of the details for Saturday's Earth Hour Challenge 2014.
