WOODSTOCK - Door to door sales people are becoming a problem in the Friendly City.
Homeowners are reporting very aggressive sales people within the city. Police Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen says there are specific laws governing door to door sales people in Woodstock, "Our bylaw office actually just put in a new bylaw where if a business comes to town and they want to solicit door to door they have to get a license with the City. So the actual licence will have a picture of them, the company they work for, and the city of Woodstock logo."
VanLeeuwen says not everyone who is trying to sell sometime door to door is trying to commit a scam, but it is important to be wary.
"There are some legitimate people that go door to door. My suggestion to consumers is to do your research before you make a business transaction at your door. So if someone comes and tries to sell you a project you can either close the door and not accept solicitors, or if you choose or you are interested in the product they are selling do your research before you sign any type of contract," says VanLeeuwen.
The best advice for dealing with aggressive sales people is to remember that it is your home, and you have the right to feel safe. "Usually what happens when someone shows up at your door and they're aggressive it's illegal to do that as well," VanLeeuwen says. "I would suggest in that case close the door - it's your property. If they're coming on your property and acting that way they could find themselves being arrested under the Trespass to Property Act and face fines."
