TILLSONBURG - A Tillsonburg resident was duped out of thousands of dollars after falling victim to a fraud.
Police say the person got a call on Monday afternoon from someone claiming to be a loss prevention officer with their bank. The man convinced the victim their bank account had been compromised and the culprit was still active.
The caller further convinced the victim that an investigation was underway by the bank and was instructed to withdraw cash to purchase Google Play Cards. The caller then requested the identification numbers from the cards to assist with the investigation, which ultimately completed the scam. The victim lost thousands of dollars in the scam.
The OPP is reminding all Oxford County residents to be extremely vigilant and to be alert for unsolicited calls, text messages or emails. Always be certain of who you are dealing with before you ever consider withdrawing money for someone or sharing personal information, no matter how convincing they sound.
Your bank will never request you to withdraw cash to assist in an investigation and complete a transaction by using gift cards.
To learn about ways to protect yourself from scams and frauds, the OPP encourages community members to consult the Competition Bureau Canada, The Little Black Book of Scams, which can be found online https://www.competitionbureau.gc.ca/eic/site/cb-bc.nsf/eng/03074.html.
If you are the recipient of a fraudulent call, text or email, or if you've been a victim of a fraud, you are encouraged to report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by calling 1-888-495-8501 or visit http://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca.
