The US implemented a 25 percent tariff on metals and Ontario paused its 25 percent electricity surcharge.
CANADA/UNITED STATES - The United States has officially implemented a 25 percent tariff on all steel and aluminum imports.
It came into effect as of midnight, and it could have been a lot worse for Canada. US President Donald Trump has threated to increase the levy to 50 percent for Canada, in response to Premier Doug Ford imposing a 25 percent surcharge on electricity heading to New York, Michigan and Minnesota.
After speaking with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick over the phone, Ford decided to pause the electricity surcharge, and Trump reverted back to the 25 percent tariff for metals.
Premier Ford will be travelling to Washington with federal Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc to meet with Lutnick tomorrow to discuss the renewal of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement.
