Mary Anne Silverthorn takes home the AppreSHEation Award at the Woodstock International Women's Day celebrations
Hundreds came together Friday to celebrate the achievements of women in Oxford County.
It's part of the International Women's Day festivities that took place at the Oxford Auditorium.
As part of the celebration, Mary Anne Silverthorn was awarded the AppreSHEation Award for her passion for change and tireless efforts to advance the status of women.
Silverthorn says she's very honoured.
"I mean I belong to a lot of organizations and work for a lot of organizations. I never expect to have any recognition, I do it because it's the love of my love. This came as a major surprise and I'm very honoured to be nominated by DASO."
Silverthorn says if she had one piece of advice for girls and young women it would be never be prohibited by what you want to do, set a goal and go for it.
Organizer Phyl McCrum says this is the fifth year for the event and the biggest yet.
"This started as a dream and we said maybe if we build an event for women to celebrate women, maybe women will come and women came in droves and we were so excited!"
Organizer Nancy Chambers says turn out has been overwhelming.
"A lot of the times women don't take the time out of their daily schedule to celebrate themselves and basically do something fun for themselves so it's a great day to take some time, have some fun and learn a little about what's available in your community."
Chambers says the event had been held at the CAW hall in the past but was moved to the Aud this year as the event continues to garner more interest each year.
Ingamo Homes and Domestic Abuse Services Oxford each received $2000 donations from Unifor.
