A statue is being erected to honour soldiers who served in Afghanistan. It will be dedicated to a local soldier killed in 2010.
WOODSTOCK - A statue is being erected in Woodstock honour those that served in Afghanistan. The statue is being dedicated to Bright soldier Tyler Todd who was killed in 2010 after stepping on an explosive device.
Master Corporal Kevin Declark, with the Canadian forces, said Todd paid the ultimate price for serving his country, ""On April 11 2010 is when Private Tyler Todd paid the ultimate sacrifice overseas in Afghanistan as a result of stepping on an IED during a foot patrol in the morning so we would like to do this dedication to the city that day April 11 2015 in the morning."
An event held by the Evening of Honour in Woodstock helped pay for the purchase of the statue. Declark, said it was challenging getting the statue brought back to Canada from the United States.
"We had no extra monies for duties, the border guard that we got he showed interest in the statue he just said I'm not going to be the guy to do that to you so you got a free pass and he said thanks to you and all the veterans of the Afghan war, it was pretty humbling."
The statue will be placed in the Cenotaph and the details are being worked on with the City of Woodstock for completion.
Stephen Smith, a historian and researcher has the details on the plan for location and installation of the statue.
"The ultimate plan is that it is going to go in what is now the garden, as you are facing the cenotaph to the left we would the like the placement to be there and we have requested that the city pour a base for us and then afford us whatever facings that they would like to see that are in complement with the cenotaph's new facing."
The goal is for the statue unveiling is April 11, 2015 the 5 year anniversary of Private Tyler Todd's passing.
