Margaret Lupton has dedicated 27 years to Zorra Township Council. Now she's running for a Ward 1 position in East Zorra Tavistock.
EAST ZORRA TAVISTOCK - The Mayor of Zorra Township is entering the upcoming election; in another municipality.
After dedicating 27 years to Zorra council, Margaret Lupton has decided to run for a councillor position in East Zorra Tavistock.
She was planning to retire from politics, but that quickly changed when no one applied for the Ward 1 council seat before the original July 27th deadline.
"I lived in Zorra all my married life but retired here. When this opportunity came up and it seemed nobody wanted to do it I thought 'I could do that!' I like this community, I've enjoyed it, I've been here for over a year now and I'm quite interested in participating."
If she's elected in, Lupton believes this will be an excellent opportunity to encourage cooperation between the two communities.
She adds Zorra and East Zorra Tavistock face similar issues.
"They also face the potential of the high speed rail line going across their township and that is a really big issue for me. It's not just the high speed rail; it appears to me in many cases that some of the larger urban centers are trying to solve their problems on the backs of rural people."
She also uses the proposed landfill as an example.
When the nomination deadline was extended, Philip Schaefer and Thomas Murray also announced their plans to run for Ward 1.
