Oxford County farmers get a helping hand in the "buy local" food movement.
WOODSTOCK -- A new partnership between Buy Local Oxford and Tourism Oxford is aiming to increase promotion for local food producers and farmer's markets in Oxford County.
The partnership helps local producers by giving an opportunity to participate in both Buy Local Oxford and Tourism Oxford's "Oxford Fresh program" for one flat rate.
"When you're driving home and you think to yourself, 'well where could I get some fresh strawberries or some sweet corn or asparagus,' you would plug that into your interactive map," explains Amy Matheson, a spokeswoman with Oxford County Federation of Agriculture.
If a local food producer or farmer's market is already a Tourism Oxford member, Matheson says they can be included on the Oxford Buy Local map at no additional charge.
The hope is to increase the presence of local food producers in both organizations' products. Currently as many as 50 different producers are involved locally with a goal of having up to 70 included over the next year.
"All of the producers in the Buy Local Oxford food guide right now have farm-gate markets," Matheson said. "We have a special category for retailers and markets right now, but everyone else, they are on farm."
The mandate of the program is to support for the local economy by encouraging shoppers to buy locally grown food directly from the farmer—and in return—consumers are assured to get the freshest, most nutritious and best-tasting food Oxford County has to offer.
