The former Raptors GM is staying in Toronto.... but not with the Raptors.
TORONTO - Masai Ujiri is returning to professional basketball in Toronto, but it's not for the Raptors.
Ujiri joined the ownership group of the WNBA's Toronto Tempo. He is joining Maple Leaf Sport & Entertainment board member Larry Tanenbaum, tennis superstar Serena Williams, and Montreal Canadiens owner Geoff Molson, among others.
Ujiri served as an executive for the Toronto Raptors from 2013 to 2025, where he helped bring a title in 2019 and won the NBA's Executive of the Year award in 2023. He is playing a key role in developing a new coaching mentorship program called Tempo Rising, which will empower women-identifying and non-binary coaches through mentorship, hands-on experience and by developing the tools to shape basketball in their communities.
The Tempo are a brand new team, and they have an expansion draft that is happening on Friday. They are slated to play their first regular-season game on May 8 at Coca-Cola Coliseum against the Washington Mystics.
