Daylight Savings Time begins this Sunday and the WFD is encouraging everyone to check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
WOODSTOCK/OXFORD - The clocks are about to spring ahead for Daylight Savings Time.
Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday morning, so the clocks will spring ahead one hour as of 2:00 a.m. and we'll lose an hour of sleep.
This means lots of people will have to update all of the clocks in their homes. Lisa Woods, the Public Information Coordinator with the Woodstock Fire Department, says people should also be checking their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to make sure they are in working order.
"What we're looking for is that you actually take a look at the alarms and make sure they are in the 10 year window. All alarms including hardwired alarms need to be replaced at the 10 year mark. All alarms should also have a battery backup even if they are hardwired so if the hydro goes out, you're still protected."
She adds working smoke alarms save lives.
"You really only have a minute from the time the alarm goes off to get out of the house safely and then the toxic fumes in the smoke will affect your breathing and your ability to see. So the sooner the alarms go off because they have a fresh battery, the more time you have to escape."
Woods says this is also a great opportunity for everyone to test out their emergency escape plans, so they're prepared in a worst case scenario. It's also a good idea to involve your pets in your emergency plan.
Oxford County is everyone to check their 72 hour emergency kits to make sure they are fully stocked with essential items including food, water, and first aid supplies.
