Don't Veer for Deer this Fall

The Norfolk OPP is reminding drivers to keep an eye out for deer while behind the wheel.

NORFOLK COUNTY - Motorists are being asked to keep an eye out for deer while driving.

The Norfolk County OPP is investigating collisions that have involved the animal.

It is said that deer are most prominent at sunrise and sunset, and that would be the highest likelihood of a deer-vehicle collision.

Deer are known to be on rural roads, and there is they can make their way to busy city streets, which causes the need for constant awareness.

Police say if a deer does dart in front of your vehicle, do not swerve to miss it, but reduce your speed as much as possible. Making any swift movements with your car gives you a greater risk of losing control, veering off the road, and potential vehicle rollovers, leading to an increased risk of severe injuries and extensive vehicle damage.

Additional valuable tips for a safe journey during this season include the following:

1) Stay vigilant, surveying your entire surroundings, not just the road ahead. Deer frequently dart across the road from areas like ditches, stream corridors, and woodlots,

2) When you spot one deer, be prepared for more; these animals often travel in herds,

3) Focus your attention on the road, especially during dawn and dusk, when deer tend to be more active,

4) Ensure that all passengers are securely fastened with seat belts, reducing the risk of injury in case of an accident, 5) Pay special attention to signs indicating deer crossings and exercise caution in those areas,

6) Enhance visibility by switching to high beams in suitable conditions.

Staying alert while driving guarantees a safer and more peaceful experience on the road. 

When drivers are vigilant and proactively take measures, they create an additional margin of time that can be crucial in averting potentially hazardous collisions.
