The Thames Valley District School Board has rescinded a decision to close New Sarum and Springfield Public Schools.
SPRINGFIELD - The Thames Valley District School Board has rescinded a decision to close New Sarum and Springfield Public Schools.
Trustee's made the decision last night. Vice Chair of the Community Schools Alliance Marcus Ryan says they made the right decision last night.
"In 2017, the Thames Valley District School Board, voted to close two rural schools in Elgin County, New Sarum Public School and Springfield Public School and I thought those were bad decisions at the time. In the last the municipal election, Elgin County elected two different trustee's, Middlesex County elected a new trustee and so did Oxford. So a selection of four new rural trustee's for the board. Trustee Ruddock from Elgin County brought forward a motion to rescind the closure of those two schools and last night, after a lot of work.,
Ryan adds, last night reminded him of the battle they went through, in trying to save A.J Baker Public School in Zorra Township.
"Last night was like a flashback, being in the gallery with those parents, who were waiting for that vote to play out and then were so thrilled when they got the decision that their kids could keep going to school in their own community. For me, it did all start, way back in 2012, with the fight to keep AJ Baker open, which lead me to run for council and working with the Community Schools Alliance to get a province wide moratorium on school closures, which is still in place. The main thing was the joy in parents faces, that their community was still going to be vital and vibrant and their kids can go to school in their community."
