As November 11th draws close, there are a group of veterans that are being remembered today. The Indigenous Veterans are being celebrated for their efforts, contributions, and sacrifices.
WOODSTOCK - Today marks Indigenous Veterans Day.
It's a day where we honor Indigenous warriors; their efforts, contributions, and sacrifices.
First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people have fought with allies in both World Wars as well as other past conflicts, continuing to serve at home and around the world today.
Until the 1980s, Indigenous people who enlisted to serve were enfranchised and lost their Indigenous Status, but that finally changed in 1985 with Bill C-31.
At that point, the enfranchisement process of Indigenous people was officially removed from the Indian Act.
Many people who had lost entitlement to registration chose to apply and be registered, many of whom never have or passed away before the change occurred.
To this day, Indigenous peoples have signed up to serve more than any other ethnic group in Canada.
Both the City of Woodstock and us at Heart FM would like to thank our Indigenous Veterans.
