Most residential properties in Woodstock will be able to have up to three additional residential units.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock City Council has voted in favour of the city's applications for amending their by-laws for additional residential units (ARUs).
This comes after the provincial government recently introduced legislative changes allowing up to three ARUs for most residential properties.
The purpose of the applications is to broaden permissions for ARUs in low-density residential areas in Woodstock. The amendments to the City’s Official Plan and Zoning By-law include allowing an increase in the maximum driveway width for properties with an ARU.
Mayor Jerry Acchione, says City Council has also decided to schedule a special meeting for residents to understand more about ARUs.
"You can learn how to have an ARU in your home, so that's say a basement apartment or an additional structure like a garage."
Acchione adds the special meeting will be good not just for locals, but also for direct city staff as well. He says he's hoping to get all thoughts and opinions on the subject onto the table.
"We definitely want staff to give options to our council to see where we're all united and what questions we have."
The special meeting is currently scheduled for Thursday, November 9th at 1:30 p.m. and will go into further details on ARUs and broadening their permissions as well as discussing further housing density strategies.
