Residents are being reminded to make sure your fire is small, no more than one metre high and one metre wide, and when putting it out they say to pour a lot of water on the fire and stir the ashes with a stick.
BRANT COUNTY - If you decide to build a campfire this weekend, the Brant County Fire department has some tips on how you can stay safe.
They say to find a spot that is sheltered from the wind and build the fire on a non-combustible surface. Residents are also being asked to consider their neighbours who do not have a campfire if the wind is greater than 15 kms/hr.
They add to make sure your fire is small, no more than one metre high and one metre wide.
Also, make sure there is always an adult around the fire when children are present and keep them at least one metre away.
When putting it out, they say to pour a lot of water on the fire and stir the ashes with a stick.
Other tips include:
Prepare the site:
- Clear a space about two metres wide for the fire.
- Scrape the area right down to the mineral soil.
- Ensure you have a pail of water or garden hose, and a shovel to control the fire.
Safety tips for kids:
- Never allow children to play with matches or fireworks.
- Teach your children to tell an adult immediately if they see a fire burning out of control.
And for a campfire recipe:
- 1 sleeve graham crackers, broken into squares
- 1 (12-oz.) bag marshmallows
- 1 bar chocolate, cut into squares
- In a large cast-iron skillet, layer graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate.
- Place skillet over a campfire cooking grate and cook until marshmallows and chocolate are melted.
It is also important to keep the community safe and prevent the spread of COVID-19. They say to not gather in groups of more than five people.
