The ground has been broken on the brand new $5 million expansion at the Woodstock Police Station.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police and the City have broken ground on a brand new expansion at the police station.
The existing building in Woodstock is over 30 years old and the force has outgrown it. Police Chief Bill Renton tells Heart FM the expansion will allow them to get all of their officers under one roof.
"With the expansion we will be able to bring the crime unit back, the intelligence unit and drug unit back, Crime Stoppers and some clerical support from there, our forensics officer will have an office, we will be able to expand our executive suite and have another boardroom because there is always a need for a second boardroom."
Councillor and Chair of the Woodstock Police Services Board Shawn Shapton was at the ceremony and said we are lucky to have the Woodstock Police force in the city.
"We provide a service in Woodstock that in my opinion is untouchable, we really are on the forefront of community policing, we're out there, not only are they walking the beat and in the cars, they are out there in community events and it's not just policing acts when your in trouble, we are really trying to continue to create a positive atmosphere when it comes to police."
Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch tells Heart FM they are hoping to have a ribbon cutting ceremony on the new building in October.
"That would be wonderful, as we go through the project hopefully we don't run into to many hiccups along the way but you never know what you are going to find as the work progresses because this will also include some renovations to the existing facility and some re purposing of the holding cells."
The estimated cost on the expansion is about $5 million dollars.
