Updates to Woodstock's Accessibility Policy will create stricter guidelines for businesses and municipalities.
WOODSTOCK - Some changes are coming to Woodstock's Accessibility Policy one month after the province made changes under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
On July 1st the province amalgamated the integrated accessibility standards and the accessible customer service standards under the AODA.
City Clerk Amy Humphries says updating the Accessibility Policy will make some rules stricter.
"It has some more stringent rules for businesses and municipalities where you have to consult with people with disabilities and take into account their perception of what's happening"
There will be an increased number of medical professionals who can authorize the use of service animals. There's also more detailed guidelines when it comes to the process businesses and municipalities have to go through if there is someone who requires a support person.
Humphries believes these changes will really help those who need it.
"It creates some more options for persons with disabilities, especially people who have service animals and it also provides a bit of clarity in terms of support persons."
