Feeding the birds at Southside Park is causing a messy situation.
WOODSTOCK - The City of Woodstock is asking residents to stop feeding the birds at Southside Park.
People have been giving birds bread crumbs at the park for years. The problem with feeding the birds is they become reliant on the food source and it attracts more birds to the area. Supervisor of Parks and Forestry Chris Kern says the bread is also not healthy for the birds and it's like humans eating potato chips. "Bread is doing more harm than good when it comes to feeding wildlife. Bread in large pieces causes blockages in the birds' digestive track and when bread moulds, it moulds really quick outside, and it can cause a whole range of illnesses for the birds."
Kern says they have gotten several complaints about all of the bird feces in the park and a Canada goose can defecate from half a pound to one and half pounds daily. Right now the Friendly City does not have a by-law in place that discourages feeding the birds, however it is something they will consider if the problem persists.
