Oxford County has issued a heat alert for the next two days. The alerts are issued when the humidex factor breaks the 40-degree barrier. Tomorrow will be the hottest day of the week with a projected high of 35-degrees, with even higher humidity. We'll see relief by Wednesday with a high of 26. During these conditions, public health reminds people outdoors to stay hydrated and seek shade where possible. Here are some other tips from Oxford Public Health regarding heat safety: Whose health is most at risk from heat? Children Seniors People with chronic health conditions Outdoor workers (landscaping, construction) How to protect yourself Drink lots of water or natural juices throughout the day before you feel thirsty. Avoid going outside, or wear a hat or stay in the shade if you are outdoors. Avoid intense activity. Plan work or outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day. Never leave a child, pet, or someone you caring for in a car or in direct sunlight. Check on those who are at risk. Signs of physical distress from heat Rapid breathing Weakness or fainting Tiredness, headache or confusion In children: vomiting, sleepiness, changes in behavior, for instance temper tantrums How to help someone suffering from heat-related illness Cool the person by applying cold water to large areas of the skin or clothing. Fan the person as much as possible. What to do if you have heat distress Seek medical attention immediately: call your doctor, go to the nearest Emergency Department, or call 911.
