Federal minimum wage increases to $18.15 an hour on April 1st

CANADA - The federal minimum wage in Canada is being increased to $18.15 an hour, an increase of 40 cents.

The increase is starting on April 1, with the increase being aimed at bringing down the cost of groceries and other essentials such as the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit along with the Food Security Fund.

The minimum wage gets adjusted every year on April 1 and is based on Canada's annual average Consumer Price index of the previous year.

Employers in federally regulated private sectors are required to adjust their payrolls to ensure that employees are getting paid at least $18.15 an hour starting April 1. If the provincial or territorial minimum wage  exceeds the federal rate, federally regulated employers must pay their employees the higher of the two rates.
