The friendly hockey tournament will takeover the Embro Arena this weekend.
EMBRO - Embro is celebrating a 50 year friendship with Kent, Ohio with a friendly hockey tournament.
Kayla Hamilton is one of the convenors and she says The Embro-Ohio Hockey Exchange dates back to 1976. A hockey team from Kent participated in another tournament in Stratford, but a snow storm hit while they were heading home.
"Embro families opened up their homes to them so they could stay overnight until storm passed and they could be on their way. The next year, Ohio wanted to say thank you and return the favour so they invited the Embro families to stay with them for the weekend and that's how this tradition started."
The two communities have taken turns hosting this hockey tournament every year since then.
It's Embro's turn to host this weekend, with the opening ceremony scheduled for 3:30 p.m. today at the Embro Arena. Hamilton says the action starts immediately afterward, with games scheduled for today, tomorrow and Sunday.
"They play Embro vs. Ohio on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday the billets, so the children who stay in your home, will play with your child. So my son's billet will play with him on Sunday."
They also have a coaches game scheduled for tomorrow with a trophy and bragging rights on the line. That game should begin at 2:30 p.m..
All of the games are free to attend and there will also be some local vendors on site to check out. Some Canadian classics will be available in terms of food, with a Beaver Tails food truck in the parking lot and poutine served in the canteen.
Kayla Hamilton called the Heart FM studio to chat with Dan and Marcie on Friday, March 20th and you can listen to the full interview below.
