Hanukkah officially began yesterday and the Woodstock Fire Department has a few tips for the families that will be celebrating over the next week.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Fire Department has some tips for local families celebrating Hanukkah.
The Jewish festival of lights kicked off yesterday and it will end on December 26th.
Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says those who are celebrating should use caution while lighting candles.
"Handheld candles should not be passed from one person to another at any time. The risk of the wax or the candle itself dropping is higher. When you're lighting your lighting candles at a candle lighting service, have the person with the unlit candle dip their candle into the flame into the lit candle."
She also says candle placement is very important.
"Lit candles should not be placed in windows where a blind or a curtain could catch fire. Those placed on or near tables, alters or shrines must be watched by an adult. As always, make sure your candles should are out of the reach of children and pets."
The candle has to burn continuously, Woods says it should be in an enclosed glass container and placed in a sink, on a metal tray, or in a deep basin filled with water.
Woods also has some tips for those cooking family meals this holiday season.
"There's going to be lots of distractions around the house during the holidays, so set a timer, take the tea towel with you or pre-cook and just warm up your food if it's going to be busy. Just make sure you have a clean work area, you're looking while you're cooking and you're keep small children and pets out of the kitchen."
