Two people from Woodstock were caught rummaging through the old Regional Mental Health Centre in St. Thomas
ST. THOMAS - People are being told to steer clear of the old Regional Mental Health Centre in Saint Thomas after OPP had to scare away a two sets of adventure seekers this month.
In the past year Elign OPP have responded to 16 reports of suspicious activity in the area.
Constable Troy Carlson says earlier this month they found another pair poking around the property. "We came across a mother and her step-daughter that were - they call themselves adventure seekers. And I guess the building is listed on some social media sites as a place to check out. So we find that a little bit concerning."
Carlson says just last week they came across a 55 year old man and a 22 year old woman from Woodstock who were entering the buildings and taking 'souvenirs.'
"If you are found inside one of the building or if you have been inside one of the buildings then you are breaking and entering which is a criminal offence. As well as if you take anything - it doesn't matter how large or small - if you do remove something from the property then that is the criminal offence of theft so both of those offences could net you an arrest and a criminal record.
The pair were arrested and charged with Break and Enter.
This trend is troubling to the OPP. "People really don't know what's inside. Are there holes in the floor that you might fall through? Are there areas that are unstable that might fall on somebody that might injure them or kill them? On top of also putting first responders in danger because if someone becomes injured or trapped inside then we have to go inside to try and rescue them," Carlson says.
