A man from Ingersoll is asking council to allow backyard chickens.
INGERSOLL - An Ingersoll resident is hoping to bring backyard chickens to Ingersoll.
Dave Klapwyk has asked town council to consider a by-law to allow people to raise a couple of chickens in their backyard so they can have farm fresh eggs. Klapwyk tells Heart FM the benefits of having backyard chickens go beyond having fresh free range organic eggs everyday.
"They make good pest control - they eat bugs, grubs, larvae - and their manure is good high nitrogen fertilizer, and also I think it's a good educational tool; people living in the city, they get a glimpse of what farming is like."
Klapwyk says the smell would not be an issue as long as you keep the coops clean.
"The manure of four chickens is probably equal or less to what a medium size dog would produce and it probably smells a lot less. There is a slight ammonia smell but it smells a lot less than dog manure would and it is also contained to a coop as opposed to all over your backyard."
He adds this is something other communities have already adopted.
"There's other communities that do it different ways depending on square footage. Other ones just have a limit of 4 or 5 per household - absolutely you wouldn't want to 10 to 15 chickens in anyone's backyard, I'm not trying to start a small farm here."
Ingersoll Council has asked staff to investigate this potential by-law and they will bring a report back to council.
