Two local Lions Clubs have joined forces for a good cause.
INNERKIP - The Woodstock Lions Club has teamed up with the Innerkip Lions Club to host the Walk for Dog Guides.
The local event will get underway at the Innerkip Lions Centre (36 James Street) on Saturday May 25th with a 1:00 p.m. start time.
Innerkip Lions Club Member Fran MacFarlane says it's a pet-friendly event.
"You can come a register right at the event. Bring your dog with you because we've got a 15-minute to 30-minute walk."
The event is also following a Superhero theme, so feel free to dress yourself and your dog up accordingly. If you don't have a dog, you will be able to purchase an invisible dog on-site complete with its own leash and collar.
The event is also going to offer face painting, a colouring contest, and a silent auction. Members of Sweaburg Lions Club will also be there serving up french fries and hotdogs.
MacFarlane says all of the money raised will be going to the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides
"All over Canada, Lion's Clubs are doing this on May 25th or May 26th. They are hoping to raise I think it's $1.3 million because each dog guide costs about $35,000 to raise and train."
It usually takes about two or three years to train a guide dog, and there are seven different types out there:
- Hearing Dog Guides
- Canine Vision Dog Guides
- Seizure Response Alert Dog Guides
- Service Dog Guides (for those with a physical or mental disability)
- Diabetes Alert Dog Guides
- Autism Assitance Dog Guides
- Facility Support Dogs (assisting agencies working with vulnerable people who have experienced trauma)
You can register for the Walk for Dog Guides online here.
Fran MacFarlane stopped by the Heart FM studio with Woodstock Lions Club member Jennifer Harrington and her guide dog Tatum on Friday May 17th. You can listen to their full interview with Dan and Marcie below:
