Now that a pool in Oxford has tested positive for West Nile Virus, everyone is encouraged to remember the four D's.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Public Health wants residents to remember the Four D's after West Nile Virus has been discovered in Norwich.
Be extra careful at dusk and dawn, dress appropriately with long sleeved clothing, wear mosquito repellent with DEET, and drain any standing water on your property to avoid being bitten by infected mosquitoes.
Manager of Health Protection Peter Haywood tells Heart FM some of the symptoms of West Nile.
"Some of them may experience mild symptoms such as fever, headaches, muscle weakness, and body aches. Some may experience a severe form of West Nile Virus called Encephalitis which is swelling of the brain."
Some people infected may not experience any symptoms at all.
Haywood says you should seek medical assistance if you contract the virus, but there isn't much doctors can do.
"There's actually no specific treatment for West Nile Virus infections. Antibiotics are not effective against West Nile Virus because it is a virus not bacteria and there is no West Nile Virus vaccine available."
The last time Oxford County had a West Nile positive mosquito pool was in 2012.
