A Tillsonburg man may need facial reconstructive surgery after an attack at the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre. According to Sun Media, Michael Smith was arrested last Sunday and taken to the facility on three charges. While there, Smith claims he wanted to use the telephone when other inmates told him he couldn't, which eventually led to several inmates stabbing and beating him with a broken piece of toast tray. Smith needed 13 stitches to close the wound to his face. Senior Media Relations and Issues Coordinator for the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, Brent Ross says this incident has a lot to do with overcrowding in our correctional facilities.
