John Scholten would like to retire as the Ward 1 Councillor for Norwich Township as of December 31st, 2023.
NORWICH TOWNSHIP - It looks like another byelection is on the horizon for Norwich Township.
John Scholten has submitted a letter to the Township, announcing his plans to retire as the Ward 1 councillor at the end of the year. The letter is included in the agenda for the council meeting coming up on Tuesday August 8th.
In the letter, Scholten says his reason for retiring is due to "personal and family reasons." He would like to continue serving on council, as the Chair of the Police Services Board, and as the Chair of the Long Point Region Conservation Authority Board until December 31st, 2023.
Scholten also said in his letter, that he is grateful to all of the past and present Mayors, councillors, and Township staff members he has worked with during his eight and a half years in office. Ward 1 covers the southern end of the Township including the villages of Otterville and Springford.
Norwich Township made national headlines earlier this year when Scholten introduced a motion to create a bylaw to only allow for government flags on municipal property. The motion was approved and the bylaw is now in effect. After the bylaw was passed by council, Alisha Stubbs resigned as the Ward 2 Councillor, and a byelection will be held on Monday September 18th, 2023.
