For the second time this season mosquitoes in Perth have tested positive for West Nile Virus
Another pool of mosquitoes in Perth County have tested positive for West Nile Virus.
This is the second pool this summer to test positive for the virus. Senior Public Health Inspector Dale Lyttle tells Heart FM it is important to protect your property from mosquitoes.
"Mostly we want people to remove standing water. Removing standing water is the best defence because mosquitoes breed in standing water."
Lyttle says you should also use insect repellant containing DEET and try to wear long sleeves and pants during dusk and dawn when the bugs are prevalent.
Public Health Inspector Stephanie Carlisle tells Heart FM the positive test shows that West Nile is still prevalent in our region.
"So symptoms of West Nile virus are fever, headache, body ache, nausea, vomiting, and a rash on the chest, stomach or back. Most of the people bitten by an infected mosquito will not show symptoms, but those are the symptoms to look out for and it will be a mild illness."
West Nile can prove serious to people with weakened immune systems.
