A barn containing about 1,500 bales of hay burst into flames on Base Line in Norwich Township Monday night. There were no animals or equipment inside at the time and no injuries have been reported.
NORWICH TOWNSHIP - No one was hurt after a barn fire in Norwich Township.
Director of Fire and Protective Services Derek VanPagee says all four stations were called out to the rural property on Base Line, between Quaker Street and Norwich Road, at around 8:30 p.m. on Monday July 10th.
"It was a hay barn fire with approximately 1,500 bales of hay inside. Thankfully, there were no animals or equipment inside and no injuries during the entire incident."
He says about 40 to 50 firefighters battled the blaze and they were on scene for about 14 hours.
"When we got there we made sure the surrounding buildings were protected. The heat was pretty intense from the flames so we went defensive, just spraying water to protect all of the other buildings for the homeowner. When resources arrived we really go in some heavy equipment, starting pulling apart all of those 1,500 bales of hay to commence an extinguishment."
VanPagee says the barn is a complete write-off and the cause of the fire has not been determined.
He would also like to thank Brant County Fire and Rescue for sending one of their tanker trucks to assist.
