The poppy campaign officially kicked off on Friday and poppy boxes are currently located at about 150 locations throughout Woodstock.
WOODSTOCK - The poppy campaign is back in the Friendly City.
Poppies are available all across Woodstock in about 150 locations, including major retailers such as Foodland, Food Basics, Walmart, Sobeys, and Giant Tiger. A volunteer from the Royal Canadian Legion in Woodstock will be stationed there most of the time.
John Glaysher is the President of Woodstock Legion Branch 55. He says the campaign is about helping the Canadian Armed Forces and that the City has always been very generous.
"It's our major undertaking every year. The focus is to support our veterans with the needs that they have and there are many of them who have a lot of needs. Also of course all of the other activities we support like the Cadets, the Sea Cadets and the Army Cadets in town, as well as minor sports etcetera."
The campaign starts on the last Friday of October and continues until Remembrance Day on November 11. The Legion will use the money they collect from the poppies toward getting veterans the medical attention they need, supplying them with food and mobility aids, and funding organizations like the Cadets.
If you'd like to get involved, Glaysher says the best way to do it is to head to the Legion so they can set you up at one of the major retailers to hand out poppies for a few hours. After all, this is the one chance per year the Legions raise a large amount of money to support the ones who sacrificed everything.
Glaysher also wanted to invite everyone to the Cenotaph on the 11th for the ceremony.
"We just think it's a very small sacrifice on our part as Canadians to take two minutes of our time to have a few moments of reflection and silence."
