The Canadian Union of Postal Workers gave their strike notice at midnight last night and will be in a legal position to strike on Monday.

Steven Gilbert, the Vice President of CUPW Woodstock Local tells Heart FM the reasoning behind the potential strike.
"They want us to give new hires less of a pension; they want the right to close 493 retail outlets across the country, which is thousands of jobs."
According to Gilbert, Canada Post also doesn't want to give postal workers in rural areas a fair wage. He says lots of local Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers are women and they don't get paid as much as their urban counterparts. He adds a lot of those urban workers are also men.
Gilbert says the union would like to expand business.
"We as a union are asking to grow the business through more staffing, through more deliveries of parcels, through online shipping and through postal banking."
CUPW will have mediated talks with Canada Post this weekend. They will be in a legal position to strike on Monday.
