The Premier is hoping cottagers will be able to visit their vacation homes soon, says he can't hold back the gates forever in responding to a question about Haldimand Norfolk.
HALDIMAND NORFOLK - The Premier of Ontario is hoping people will be able to go to their cottages and vacation homes soon.
Doug Ford was asked about an order from the Chief Medical Officer in Haldimand Norfolk. They are not allowing anyone to visit their cottages along Lake Erie right now. Ford says you can hold back people for so long.
"As we see the numbers come down, by May the 24th, hopefully the numbers are going to continue to come down. We are going to have a heart to heart conversation this week with the Mayors. There is only so long you can hold back tax payers from going to their cottages."
In Muskoka, the vast majority of taxes are paid through cottagers and the economy is totally dependent on cottagers. Ford says they will be having these conversations this week.
"If people go up to their cottage, bring their own food, don't go to the stores, stay at their cottage by May the 24th, their is only so long I can hold the big gates back from these people, they are going to want to go back to their vacation property. As we see the numbers go down... let's just what happens, I am going to have that wholesome conversation with the Mayors in the next couple of days and we will see where we go from there."
Ford is hoping to have an update on cottage country by Thursday of this week.
