The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is fighting the threat of rabies in our area with vaccine bait air drops.
The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is distributing rabies vaccine baits by land and by air in our area.
Supervisor of Science Operations for the rabies program Tore Buchanan says the baits will appear within a 50 kilometre radius to the Hamilton area where the first cases of raccoon rabies were found.
"They're an army green colour - a khaki colour - designed to be kind of camouflaged. They're small - about the size of a loonie and they have inside a blister pack that has the liquid vaccine inside of them. And the outside coating has an attractive scent to raccoons and skunks."
These baits are not harmful to family pets, but they do ask that you try to keep pets away from the baits.
The latest air drop was in the Brantford, Burlington, and Hamilton areas with plans to distribute more in the Stratford and Oxford County areas in the near future.
Buchanan says this method of vaccinated bait has a proven track record.
"Quebec is currently using the same protocols right now and they've successfully eliminated rabies so we do expect to be successful but it will take 3 - 5 years to do that."
