As many as 25 firefighters were on hand last night to battle a blaze at Spicer's Towing in Woodstock's east end. As daybreak has hit, Fire Prevention Officer Jeff Slager says the damage is extensive. "Pretty much complete destruction of two of their bays, the south end of the building. Fortunately, due to the construction of the building, the design of it prevented it from getting too far into the rest of the facility. There was smoke damage throughout. We were able to work with Spicer's to get out a number of their equipment that were still in the building, before anything did happen." No one was injured, but a few homes in the area were evacuated because of smoke concerns. "An event of this size, especially when it's a garage and we don't what's potentially going to be in there...you think of garages you are going to have a lot of flammable, combustible liquids in there, and a lot of potentially unknowns...welding and cutting equipment." Businesses in the mainly industrial block are shut down for the day. Heavy equipment is being brought in to start to pick some pieces of the building apart, to see if it's safe for investigators to enter. The damage estimate is also unknown. If it hits $500,000, the Ontario Fire Marshall will be called in.
