The Woodstock Police are asking everyone to educate themselves and their families about some of the popular scams in the area.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police Service is warning the public about scams that prey on vulnerable taxpayers, utility users, and consumers.
Constable Nicki VanLeeuwen says although most people are becoming more educated about frauds and scams, they still exist.
"We have calls from members of the public daily for frauds and scams so it's still an issue. The one good thing that we're seeing is that people are much more educated than they have been so we're seeing a lot less victims of this crime."
Although police in Woodstock have noticed a decline in the amount of frauds and scams, the Canada Revenue Agency has noted an increase in the number of telephone scammers who pretend to be from the CRA. Sometimes scammers will also pretend to work for a local hydro company. When they call they will tell you that you owe them some money and if you don't send them the funds via credit card or wire transfer there will be consequences.
VanLeeuwen knows how to avoid falling for these telephone scams.
"It's really quite simple. If you're getting phone calls hang up the phone and do not give any personal information to these people."
VanLeeuwen has noted that the CRA scam targets land lines and seniors are often the victims. She advises anyone who is close with a senior to help educate them about this issue.
"If you have someone who is elderly please have a conversation with them and get them information about frauds and scams."
If you believe you have become the victim of a fraud or a scam contact the police at 519-537-2323 or Crime Stoppers at 519-421-TIPS (8477). Victims are also asked to report incidents to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
Between January and November of last year, over 13 000 people across the country were victimized by these scams.
