Oxford County PRIDE officials are seeking the publics help. This is after the PRIDE crosswalk in Tillsonburg was vandalized. It was complete less than a week before it was defaced by spray paint.
OXFORD - Another hit towards the 2SLGBTQIA+ Community.
This time the newly painted PRIDE crosswalk in Tillsonburg was the target of vandalism.
The crosswalk was completed on Thursday, July 27, 2023, and it was not even a week later that it was spray painted.
Oxford County PRIDE officials are looking to the public to get any information in regard to who may be behind this tragic act. Their Facebook Page released a statement stating their displeasure.
"So sad our sponsors and community members donate and fundraise, and this happens? Hate and vandalism? Unfortunately, the Tillsonburg crosswalk was vandalized within a week of completion. This is why we have to continue to advocate and educate. Hate and discrimination will NOT WIN. If you have any information about the criminals who did this, please contact OPP."
Furthermore, President of Oxford County Pride, Tami Murray says that the community is feeling the effects of this terrible act.
"Obviously we are highly disappointed and pretty upset at the destruction and vandalism that continues to occur to either crosswalks or flags in Oxford County."
Murray adds, getting to the bottom of this issue will continue.
"Anybody who might have a video that is in the area, we are searching different businesses in the area. Obviously the OPP have been informed. This is destruction of property and as far as I am concerned a hate crime."
This is not the first time Oxford County has had PRIDE related items vandalized, as Ingersoll had their crosswalk vandalized in May, in June the Town of Norwich had PRIDE flags torn down and Tillsonburg had flags at a business defaced in separate incidents last summer.
