A brand new hockey team for the Greater Metro Hockey League is in the works in Tillsonburg.
TILLSONBURG - The town of Tillsonburg is about to get a new hockey team that will represent Oxford County in the Greater Metro Hockey League.
If all goes according to plan the team will join the league at the start of the 2016 season. The league is considered Junior A hockey, however the quality is not as good as the OHL but it is considered a step up from Junior C or Junior. Most of the teams in the league import 50 percent of the roster from the United States and Europe and kids pay to play in the league for a chance to get a University scholarship south of the border. Owner of the Tillsonburg Junior Hockey Club Ian Ellis tells Heart FM right now they are in the process of recruiting players.
"Where we sit right now is we're out recruiting, looking at players, handing out letters, in preparation for the draft, and in preparation to get ready for the training camp. We're in line with our tasks and our goals to where we want to be at this time."
Ellis says fans are going to love the style of hockey in the GMHL and he notes they will likely already have some built in rivalries with teams like the Norfolk Vikings and London Lakers.
Right now the team does not have name, however they are hoping to have a contest and are accepting suggestions to name the team on their web site
