Two local organizations are benefiting from a donation through Thamesford's Cold Springs Turkey Farm. Both the VON of Oxford and the Salvation Army are receiving $5000 to install new freezers. The VON is replacing a freezer that they use for their "Meals on Wheels" program, while Susan Allen with the Woodstock Salvation Army explains what they're looking to purchase. "We have been planning for the last couple of years to get a full-sized walk-in freezer, so that we are able to assist more people with frozen food and frozen vegetables. Something we can assist them better with." The money comes through the Oxford Community Foundation in a fund established in the names of the original owners of Cold Springs: Harvey and Erma Beatty. Cold Springs Office Manager Jean Carson says, "Meals on Wheels and Food Bank perfectly align with supporting food security programs. The ability to help them with a piece of equipment that helps them just perfectly aligns with what we were looking for and what we want to do." Carson, a longtime Thamesford resident and employee at Cold Springs sits on a committee will review grant requests twice a year. Here are the criteria the committee considers: Funding Criteria: Requesting Organization must be Charitable and have a Canada Revenue Agency Number ? religious organizations are not eligible. Philosophy: To support food security programs for disadvantaged people. This includes: Crisis Intervention: - food banks, mobile food programs, school or community nutrition services for disadvantaged and food-based catastrophe relief. Health & Wellness - education and outreach programs that provide people with the information and skills to provide healthier food for themselves and their family Sustainability: - initiatives that establish a reliable supply of nutritious food and promote self-sufficiency for economically disadvantaged people. Focus: - priority will be given to capital or pilot project initiatives that have a realistic sustainability plan.
