As the temperature continues to stay in the 30s it's important to think of newly planted trees and their need for water to survive. Supervisor of Parks Chris Kern says frequent watering on a hot, dry day with little cloud cover could determine whether your new tree lives or dies. "Remember that in heavy soils it is possible to over water, so check the soil before watering. Checking the soil is done by digging into the soil about 5cm to see if there's dry and dusty conditions. If it's dusty, it's time to water." Kern says a good mulch will also help to trap moisture and keep your trees happier longer.
