The infected mosquito trap was pulled from Norwich. This is the first positive test for West Nile in Oxford County since 2012. Local health officials test these traps weekly. Public Health officials are offer the following advice to protect yourself from West Nile.
- Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts and pants when mosquitoes are most active (dusk and dawn).
- Avoid using scented products that attract mosquitoes.
- Use a bug spray with 30% DEET if you are an adult, or a specially formulated DEET product for children according to age.
Another key tip is to prevent breeding grounds on your home by removing any standing water on your property. This includes bird baths, discarded tries, flower pots, wheelbarrows, barrels or tin cans that are left outside.
