This year's Woodstock Relay For Life Champion has been fighting cancer since she was 5, but nothing can dampen her spirit.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Relay for Life has announced their champion for 2016.
19 year old Kay-Lynn Stevens is battling Ependymoma, a rare type of cancer that usually forms in the brain or spine. She was diagnosed twice when she was a child - once at the age of five and once when she was seven.
Stevens says she was cancer free for quite a while before being diagnosed once again.
"The doctors kind of gave us the outlook that if you lasted 10 years, pretty much you're in the clear but we got to 10 years and it was not in the clear. Unfortunately the cancer had come back."
Once the cancer returned in 2015, doctors found the cancer to be more aggressive, inoperable and they also found some in her spine.
Stevens says she still participated in last years relay after receiving the devastating news.
"So many people have supported us we decided it's good for us to kind of give back. So we kind of got a team together last year, we came on out, we weren't all feeling great for it but we did it and we are coming back this year."
Stevens tells Heart FM how she reacted when she found out she was this year's relay champ.
"I was in shock! My mom told me, they said they were sitting there basically kind of deliberating over who it's going to be, who it should be, and then she told me they just thought of me just out of the blue. I didn't even know I was that popular and people know me but they thought of me and that was such a blessing. It's so awesome to be that to other people."
Stevens was chosen to be this year's relay champ because of her infectious smile and positive attitude.
This year's relay will take place at the CASS track on June 10 from 7pm to 1am. You can register for the Relay and find more information by clicking here.
