Public Health reminding everyone about helmet safety
WOODSTOCK - Following the death of a Brantford teen on his skateboard earlier this month, health officials are reminding the public about the benefits of wearing a helmet.
Oxford County Public Health Nurse Lorna Buratto says locals should be using helmets when performing any wheeled sport.
"When you're at a skate park, it's hard cement. Pretty difficult for our head to withstand a hard knock on such a surface. It is known that wearing helmets when skateboarding reduces the risk of serious head injury by 85 percent so I would say that's really significant."
She encourages skateboarders of all ages to purchase a bucket style helmet that fits around their head.
"Straps should be tight enough that they can only get 1 finger in under their chin because if it's loose or the strap is loose or the helmet is too big, then when the person flies down before hitting anything, the helmet is actually already probably displaced on the head because it is loose and wont protect the head properly."
"All of us have only one head and one brain and the risk of having a serious head injury leading to permanent brain damage is there and so none of us want to end up with a life long injury which can impact the way that we live and/or death."
