Today is Blue Monday and is statistically speaking the most depressing day of the year
If your feeling a little depressed today, you are not alone.
The third Monday in January is known as Blue Monday and is often referred to as the most depressing day of the year. Christie Kent with the CMHA in Woodstock tells Heart a lot of people suffer from what is known as the winter blues.
"Winter Blues is about 15 percent of our population and that tends to happen when our days get shortened and we have the colder weather, people tend to notice they are a little bit more sluggish, may feel a little more tired after rest, maybe craving heavier foods or more caffeine during the day."
Kent says another thing people suffer from this time of year is seasonal depression. She notes the best thing you can do to beat the winter blues is to exercise and get as much natural daylight as you can.
"Making sure we are getting as much natural daylight as we can, researchers suggest that 20 minutes is the golden number, whether that means going outside or sitting near a bright lit window, or if you can make it happen the best option is going on vacation. Also it's important to try and maintain that healthy lifestyle as much as possible through the winter months, unmanaged stress leads to anxiety and depression regardless of the time of year, so it is important to exercise and have a our feel good chemicals going up, relaxation, whether that be pampering yourself with tea's, baths, books art and music."
