Council will begin work on a proposed $16 million capital budget Monday
City Council will start work Monday on their proposed $16,375,000 capital budget.
As it stands now, the budget is sitting at a $2.5 million increase over 2013, which includes money for items like a $1.7 million extension of Woodall Way, $600,000 for the Art Gallery and $500,000 for 495 Dundas Street.
Chief Administrative Officer David Creery says there's approximately $10 million in maintain and replace projects which means rebuilding the assets the city currently owns.
"About $2.5 million in new and growth related projects and about $3.4 million are strategic initiative projects. Things that come out of our recent strategic plan exercise that respond to goals that were revealed during our community consultation."
Creery says for quite a number of years, the magnitude of road spending has been at a level that is not adequate to maintain the road system.
"We are proposing spending in the capital budget next year of approximately $3.7 million which is consistant with 2013 spending but our recent roads needs study are suggesting that number should be closer to $8 million in order to maintain the system adequacy."
Creery says the backlog of roads classified as 'now needs' which means they should be rebuilt in the current period, is about $35 million dollars so the city's spending is not at the level it should be.
Council will also get a closer look at the proposed 2015-2018 capital forecast which currently sits at $74,500,000.
