Plattsville, Thamesford, and Embro arenas are shaking things up at the canteen with new, healthier options.
Healthy food options are now available at the community centre arenas in Plattsville, Thamesford, and Embro.
In partnership with Oxford County Public Health, recreation facilities in Blandford-Blenheim and Zorra Townships are now offering healthy options at their concession stands alongside traditional arena fare. Public Health Nutritionist & Registered Dietitian Katie Neil tells Heart FM why they wanted to make this change.
"Sometimes the food that had just been normalized on site as traditional recreation and arena food doesn't exactly support health and physical fitness and wellness. We wanted to introduce healthier options that have a little bit more in nutrient density to support those who are being physically active and our athletes and for the spectators in the stands."
Neil says this move was a long time coming and it was done after consulting with parents in the region.
"We did a phone survey that reached about 1 000 county residents and one of the questions we asked is, 'Would you be supportive of healthier food and beverage options in your recreation centres?' 75 percent said yes they would."
