An environmental assessment report will be handed to council as they consider the future of the Harrington Dam.
Zorra Township Council will receive the final report of the Environmental Assessment of the Harrington Dam at their next council meeting.
The EA was commissioned by the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority and considers a number of options regarding the dam. Those options including doing nothing to remove the dam and eliminating the Harrington Pond all together.
The report will be presented to Zorra Township Council on Tuesday June 20th at 6:35 p.m. Following the meeting they will have a question and answer period for the public. The Chair of the Harrington and Area Community Association Phillip Kerr is urging everyone to attend the meeting.
“It is extremely important that the community be represented in large numbers to show that time has not diminished our determination to keep this pond.”
Kerr says the pond is a huge part of Zorra Township.
“The pond has been a defining feature of Harrington since the 1840’s. Water from the pond provided power to various mills that were the industrial base in Harrington’s early years, well before Confederation. More recently, the Harrington Pond figures in the memories of many who fished here, often as a family activity.”
